Train horns have been in use as long as have locomotives. They are used by engineers to alert motorists and pedestrians that the train is nearing a crossing, to inform passengers that the train will be departing the station and of course, to clear animals off of the tracks before a train comes through. Train horns are used by rail company workers during switching operations and when performing track work to let approaching trains know of their presence.
When internal combustion began to power the locomotives, the air horns from trucks were used but were not loud enough to be heard over the powerful diesel engines that the locomotives were using. The truck horn design was then upgraded by the railroad company, using oscillation to push the air through a power chamber and vibrate against a nozzle. The position of the diaphragm will allow more air or less air and the constant oscillation of the diaphragm creates waves of air that causes it to produce the sound of the horn. The North American locomotives that were manufactured before 1990 still used the old manual pull cord technique that was known as feathering, which just meant modulation was possible for the horns loudness. During the 1990s locomotive began using pushbutton controls and a pedal was built into the cab below the floor and when the pedal was pressed, it sounded the train horn.
Recently, train horns have become popular with car and truck enthusiasts as an addition to their customized vehicles. Of course, train horns are not generally manufactured as vehicle accessories, since people are accustomed to hearing these at a train crossing - this makes them unsuitable for use in traffic and their use is outlawed in many places. Train horns have become controversial in general as many cities have implemented quiet zones where engineers may only operate their horns in an emergency. Unfortunately, these restrictions have lead to many accidents since motorists and pedestrians alike have been unaware of a train’s approach.
Each country has its own meaning of the train horn signals. The standard meaning of the train horn signal vary from current state railway networks, while the train horn signals in the United States will vary from different railway companies.
In the U.S., the standard signal given by train horns at a crossing is two long horn sounds, followed by one short and one long. This pattern is repeated until the train has passed the crossing. In Florida, there was a ban on the use of train horns in many locales; however, this ban was lifted in only a few years because of the greatly increased rate of train accidents.
Even though train horns are very annoying there is a definite purpose for them and people should not abuse them; or try to make quite zones where a train horn should be sounded.

How are oil prices affecting you these days? with the latest rise in oil prices, it seems like the price fluctuations will never end. We never know if it will go up one day or down the next day. However, with this last price fluctuation, we were not affected at all because we recently made the decision to convert our vehicle to an electric car.
We have just completed converting our car to an electric powered car. The old days of being totally influenced by the price of gas are gone. You may be just where we were. We wanted to convert our car but we were not sure if it would even work.
To answer this question, we went out and did some research on electric car conversion. We wanted to know if electric car conversions work, the cost expected to complete a conversion, and how to even get started. We aren’t mechanics, but we dabble a little in home improvement projects. So, we wanted to know if we really could be successful since we have very little automotive experience.
To perform a conversion, the options are either to hire a professional or to do it yourself. Hiring a professional can be relatively expensive compared to the cost of performing it yourself. As the demand rises for electric cars due to high oil prices, then the cost to hire a professional will continually climb as well. If you are interested in performing the work yourself, then there are systems available that can assist you to complete your conversion for less than $500. This is equivalent to the monthly cost of gas in many families today.
The conversion process was easier than we initially thought. We had the right tools and equipment in place thanks to the help that we received. The guides available really help to take a beginner through the process step by step. The whole electric car conversion process can be performed in a timely manner depending on your knowledge level.
To build an electric car, it only requires that you replace your current engine that runs on gas and replace it with an electric motor. Rechargeable batteries are used to power this electric motor. Your motors and batteries will play a big role in your vehicle performance. They will simply determine the distance you will be able to travel before you need a recharge.
Using an electric car how to guide will assist in taking a beginner go from start to finish. Guides that provide complete instructions with pictures and diagrams are the best to get started with. A well written guide will also have resources available to you to show you were you can get your tools and parts for very affordable prices.
Electric car conversion is a definitely an option to eliminate the money you pay at the pump. It has helped to remove our dependency on oil as our primary vehicle fuel source. We are able to pass by the gas station and not blink one eye when we see the daily price of gas.

Tired of what’s called pain at the pump? I bet you are. Well, don’t worry; the price of gas isn’t going back to .25 a gallon. That’s for sure. So what do you do? How do you keep yourself from getting a second job so you can make sure you can fill up your tank?
All of the time, the news is reporting on some fortunate man, who chooses to select a hybrid car as the car he would own next. He wonders if he will actually save money, and to his surprise, he saves a whole lot.
What about your wallet
The price of gas continues to fluctuate, but you don’t have to be left broke. And you don’t have to let the unstable economy control you. Do whatever you can to change your circumstances. And there are all kinds of options for you. For instance, did you know a hybrid car can help you get more control of the money in your pocket? Well it can. Hybrid cars are becoming more and more popular as the cost of fuel goes up, and hybrid cars can really give a person peace of mind.
Who worked those forty hours? You did. So make sure you have something to show for it for a chance. A hybrid car is a really nice car to have. And it will be a real help to your bank account. Your wife and kids who are in college will love you more. So what are you waiting for? Buy a hybrid car so you can go around thinking, “money cometh.”
Conventional cars verses. Hybrid cars
Because hybrid cars have a complex internal design, they can have a pretty hefty price tag. On the other hand, conventional cars, which have probably gotten more efficient in design as the years have gone on, are quite affordable these days. Many people can be seen selling their old conventional cars. Some people even give these types of cars away. However, since a large percentage of the general population has never owned a hybrid, there aren’t many people selling used hybrid cars. Therefore, the average person looking to buy a hybrid would probably have to purchase one from a car dealer.
Here are the reasons why a person might choose a conventional car over a hybrid car and vice versa. But both a hybrid car and a conventional car can use similar types of batteries
But the final decision is up to you. There are risks involved with both types of cars. But those who like to try out new things might just consider splurging on a hybrid car.

Are you taking a vacation to Las Vegas? If so, getting around this city can be difficult if you don’t have a car. There is public transportation and taxis but distances in Las Vegas are farther apart than they appear and due to the high demand, taxis lines can be long. With a car you’ll be able to travel out of town to the border city of Prim and even the Grand Canyon. You will be able to come and go as you please and see and do things that you wouldn’t be able to with other forms of transportation. Here are some tips to renting a car in Las Vegas.
Since Las Vegas is a popular tourist destination there are many car rental companies to choose from. The majority of them have rental offices at the airport which is convenient especially if you’ll be renting a car your entire vacation and will be flying out of the Las Vegas airport. There are also rental offices in town which may be more convenient if you won’t be renting your car until later in your holiday. Car rental companies in town may also have better rates than ones located at the airport.
Types of Cars
Since Las Vegas is popular for vacationers as well as business people, there are various types of cars to choose from. There are compact and economy size cars as well as luxury cars. If you’ll be traveling to one of the nearby state parks and camping then there are minivans and SUV’s to choose from. If you’re looking for more excitement then many car companies offer specialty rentals such as sport cars and convertibles. There are some agencies that specialize in luxury sport cars such as Porsche and Ferrari.
Finding the Best Deal
To find the best deal on a Las Vegas rental car, use the internet to price compare. There are travel websites such as Travelocity and Orbitz that will show you available rates and models from various rental companies during the time you wish to rent. You can also book your plane tickets and hotel on these sites so they provide one-stop shopping. There is a nominal charge for booking on these sites which can be worth it for the convenience.
Partner Discounts
Many rental companies, airlines and hotel chains partner with each other so you should check with your hotel and airline. To receive the discount or special rate you’ll need a special rate code and enter it when booking your rental. If you don’t have the discount code then call the rental agency and ask for the discount.

The manufacturers for air filters come up with all sorts of new designs each day which may confuse you, especially when you don’t know which one will fit your home the most. The variety of air filters on the market makes it prudent for you to search extensively before you make a choice. Air filters are becoming a favorite among Americans because they guarantee that you are breathing nothing but the best of air.
Cost is essential when you are thinking about buying air filters. Sometimes, cheap air filters may require expensive part replacements if you aren’t too careful in maintaining them. You should always budget for the kind of air filter you want so that even if you don’t have the cash, you can start saving for it.
If you fail to pay special attention to your air filters, you may risk damaging it all together. Air filters should be cleaned up at least once in a month for optimum performance. A bad air filter may end up causing irreparable damage to your cooling and heating systems because of accumulated dirt.
Scientific studies show that air inside a room is more impure than air outside the room. This is mostly because the air outside moves around and circulates but the air inside a room is stagnant and more risky. Air pollution has warranted the use of air filters for rooms. The incidence of air pollution has led to a rise in air filter products in the market.
You may not be aware of the fact that those constant headaches and dizziness you feel is all a result of the air you breathe. Clean air often equals to stable health while impure air equals unstable health. For the sake of your health and the health of your family, you should get an air filter to generate clean air.
Your air conditioner will function a lot better with the right air filters. You can extend the life of your air conditioner by taking great care to replace the air filter parts regularly. Also, cleaning your air conditioner air filter will help to preserve its life more.
An electronic air filter works by attracting air allergens to it in pretty much the same way that a magnet attracts metal. The HEPA electronic air filter has been reputed to rid the air of 99.97% of the allergens around. If you want to make sure that you are breathing nothing but the purest air, go for HEPA electronic air filter.
Cheap air filters eventually cause you to spend more money when you have to buy accessories or replacement parts. It is better to buy branded air filters which are expensive but highly effective when it comes to decontaminating the air. Brand name air filters include Honey well, Creck and Hunter.

European branded cars are often high on the list of used cars people love to buy. Lexus and BMW are car manufacturer names that rank high on the used car list options for many people. If you are a lover of jaguar automobile lines, you can easily get a used one online or in an auction.
It’s easy to encounter problems in your search for a second hand or used car. One of the problems that you are likely to face in securing a second hand car is slick car dealers. If you must purchase a second hand car from a car dealership, go to one that is renowned for honest dealings.
Government auctions are an excellent source of good used cars for a used car buyer. Government auctions feature cars that are still in very good shape. You can be sure of getting quality cars for affordable rates at government auctions.
One of the fastest ways to sell your car on the internet is to take pictures of it and upload it to a website where its features can be viewed by interested buyers. More cars are being sold on the internet than any other source. You should take advantage of the wide reach of the internet and sell your used car faster.
You should always ensure that the paper work of the used car you are going to purchase is intact. If you are even remotely suspicious about the quality of a used car, back off from buying it. You should only make a used car purchase after you have looked at the car and are fully satisfied that it is worth your money.
Showroom prices of cars are totally outrageous. Most people prefer used cars because they are cheaper. You can buy a used car and not worry about sacrificing quality as long as you meet the right used car dealer.
In selecting the best used car deal, do not go for the first offer you find. More often than not, the first used car offer you get isn’t the best. Always search intensively for used cars online before you settle on the best offer.
The steering wheel, brakes and engines are the most important parts of a car that need to be intact if you are to buy a good second hand car.

Plan to holiday in Sydney, Australia? Well, indeed a good choice, but how do you get about once you land there? Hire a car of course! There are many ways in which a car can be hired out here. The easiest (but not necessarily cheapest) way is to ask your travel agent to do the needful. This would save you a lot of trouble but is perhaps not the best bargain. Your travel agent may have ‘tie ups’ with some Sydney car rental company which pays him a commission which means he makes money both ways, while you lose out on the better deals.
So what’s the solution? Well a smart approach would be to scour the Internet for good car rental offers and book your car online. Carefully peruse the terms and conditions of every car rental company. The rental services have user friendly online forms that need minimal details - your planned date of arrival, date of completion, as well as the delivery details and of course your basic personal information. And most car companies conveniently accept credit card payments. Some are more tech savvy and even take paypal payments or wire transfers.
So what are the fees to look out for when renting a car in Sydney? The base rate of rentals is in the range of $70 to $100 per day. Other standard fees charged by car rental companies in Sydney include toll pass fees $2.00 per day and Insurance Excess Reduction of $15.00 per day. Other fees may be applicable depending on your choices - additional driver fees at $3.00 per day, baby seat fee at $9.00 per day, Sat Nav GPS $35.00 flat fee as well as a fee of $10.00 per day for under age driver (under 25). As you can see, hiring a car in Sydney is not cheap but hunt for the better bargains by browsing through online ads to check out the discounts on offer. Discounts are invariably available only through direct online bookings and not through an agent.
While car companies may claim that the prices offered on the net are fully inclusive, it is in your best interests to examine the terms and conditions as most hidden costs are not immediately discernible. Fees such as Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) are a case in point. An international driving license is a must. The validity for using your international driving license in Sydney is three months. Always check that your personal travel insurance covers you for motor vehicle accidents and rental car insurance excess as it is more economical than paying the car rental company in the event of an accident.
If you wish to land a real bargain, try taking ‘off the beaten track’. Hound the Sydney centered blogs, Yahoo chat sessions and you will find plenty of folks who will rent out a car at rock bottom prices. Ensure, however, that you don’t fall prey to unscrupulous scammers; the possibility of being swindled or even falling for a stolen car is quite high. You may land up in deep trouble with the law enforcement agencies - you don’t want to be on the wrong side of the law! So take the tried and true path; research and pick the best car rental deal, the safe and effective way.

Renting a car is never easy. The Internet is full of advertisements promising the best deal and they usually give a ‘base price’ in the range of $70 to $100 per day depending upon the size of the car. However, at most times the companies do not explain the hidden costs or even what constitutes the base price offered. Depending on which country the customer rents a car, the quantum of various fees varies. However, it is best to make informed choices when it comes to renting a car - keeping abreast of all the fees that make up your rental bill is the first step when you head out to your travel destination.
Most car rental companies demand a safety deposit the first time you rent a vehicle. This portion of the rental fee is fully refundable and may come to a couple of hundred dollars depending upon the size of the car. The car rental fee is next; this is the actual charge for renting the car. Most car rental companies also charge a ‘contract fee’ to cover the administrative costs of renting the car to the customer. If the customer requests for a delivery of the car and a place for collection of the returned car, the company may charge two separate fees, once for delivery and the other being the collection fee. Beware though! A collection point designated in a different state by the customer may attract anything up to a couple of thousand dollars as collection fees depending upon the distance of the collection point from the car company’s home office. If the delivery is requested at the airport, a separate ‘airport surcharge’ will also be applicable. In addition, if the delivery or the collection is requested after normal working hours, an ‘after hours fee’ may also be charged. Traditionally, car companies charge a state taxes fee should the client need to drive across states. Driving across international borders may even attract a cross border fee - this is a mandatory fee that may be substantial and not easily waived. Also if you have an additional driver, an additional driver fee can also be charged.
Some countries also charge a tourism fee for tourists who wish to rent a car. Most US cities charge a flat rate as toll tax, and this can range from $2 to $5 per day. Some car companies also charge fuel charge fee or extra mileage fee. This may depend on what scheme of car rental the customer has opted for. Some companies go by a set number of kilometers driven per day or set number of hours per day. Any excess kilometers or time is then charged as extra fee. In case the customer requires a baby seat or a ski rack then additional fees are required to be paid. In some countries being young, usually under the age of 25, attracts extra fees in the form of younger driver fees. Again look out for the hidden fees. With fancy names such as collision damage waiver (CDW) fees, you may pay hefty sums as much as $15 a day. This fee is not actually collision insurance but more as a guarantee that the rental company will pay for any damage to the rental car, along with a caveat of some ‘deductibles’.
Finally if you intend to return the car earlier than planned, don’t hope for a sizeable refund. Many companies actually penalize you for cutting the rental duration; an early return fee becomes admissible! It is therefore extremely important that you - a prospective customer - are attentive to the ads and the terms and conditions of hire before signing up for a car rental. If you take renting seriously, consulting your car insurance company or your credit card company before hiring a car would be a great idea. In the end, don’t fall for tall claims and false promises; choose your rental company prudently and have a worry-free vacation!
