Keeping your Blackberry Pearl running at optimum speeds, you’ll need to be careful your internal memory doesn’t get bogged down with all sorts of garbage. If it’s not watched closely, it will get full quickly and your phone will start to bog down. I’m going to talk about the biggest issues and how to manage them.
It’s important to know how much memory is available on your Pearl. This can be done quickly by following these steps:
1. Go into your phone options. You’ll find these by clicking on the wrench icon.
2. Scroll to status and click.
3. The memory capacity of your phone is listed as FILE TOTAL.
4. The portion of that capacity available is listed as FILE FREE.
Our goal is to increase the number listed under FILE FREE. The bigger that number, the better your phone will run.
Clean out your inbox. I explain how to do this on my website, so I wont go into the details here.
Content Compression
If you don’t already have content compression enabled on your Pearl, you’ll want to do that next. I can’t tell you exactly how much room this will open up since I’ve used it from day one. If you’re not using it, it will give you a quick boost in available memory.
1. With the main screen open you’ll see all of your icons on one screen (not the home screen).
2. Click on the little wrench icon (options).
3. Use the pearl to move down to “SECURITY OPTIONS” and press the pearl button.
4. Using the pearl, select GENERAL SETTINGS.
5. Scroll down to Content Compression.
6. If ENABLED is not selected, do so now.
7. Press the Blackberry Button (7 dots left of the pearl).
8. Now choose SAVE.
That was easy wasn’t it? Now you have content compression enabled on your phone and you’ll open up a good amount of memory. This not only compression pictures, video and music, but also items in your calendar and inbox.
Deleting Programs You Never Use
You should take some time to go through all of the applications installed on your Blackberry Pearl and delete any you know you don’t need. I never play Brick Breaker, so I deleted it. There are a few programs you don’t really need that you could probably delete.
1. Go to your main screen.
2. Select the wrench icon. This will open up your options.
3. Highlight and select Advanced Options.
4. Scroll to and click on Applications.
5. Highlight any applications you don’t use and want to delete.
6. Scroll through and find any applications you dont want, need or use.
7. Select DELETE and press the pearl.
8. Scroll down to Delete and press the pearl button.
NOTICE: You may be asked to reboot your Pearl before the deletion process is completed.
There are a number of other tricks you can use to free up memory on your Pearl. Try the above steps and see if you still need more room. You should see a big increase in the performance of your Blackberry Pearl.

The scroll ball or “pearl” on your Blackberry is made to work in a similar way to a mouse on a computer. Unfortunately, a mouse isn’t necessarily fast, it’s simple. That’s what a mouse or scroll ball was designed to do, simply things on a computer or in this case, a smartphone. If you want fast, you’re going to need to master a little trick known as “keyboard shortcuts”.
Your Blackberry Pearl has it’s own set of keyboard shortcuts which can save you a lot of time. If you’re still using your scroll ball and pressing that little “Blackberry button” to the left of it to open up menus, you’re going to love what I’m about to teach you. For the most part, I’m going to stay focused on managing your messages by using keyboard shortcuts.
The Shortcuts
A lot of businesses will spell out their phone number to help you remember it. That’s great for remembering but it’s worthless for those of us using a Blackberry Pearl. If you compare the keyboard on your Pearl with one on a traditional phone, you’ll notice the letters don’t land on the same numbers.
I’ve actually had situations where I would look at a “regular” phone and translate the word into numbers so I could dial it on my Blackberry Pearl. Thankfully I’ve learned of a secret little keyboard trick that eliminates this problem. As you’re dialing a number, when you get to the part where you need to spell, just press and hold the ALT key (t’s the one just below ZX on the left) and then spell the word using “multi-tap.”
“Multi-tap” mean, if you want to use the 2nd letter on a key, you press it twice. For example, take out your Pearl and look at it. If you want to type a Y, you’d press the “2″ key two times. The first press brings up the T and the second tap brings up the Y. If you ever have to type in a password using your Pearl, it works the same way.
This also works if you’re phone company gives you short cuts to find out your Balance (#BAL) or make a payment (#PMT). Just hold down the ALT key and use the “multi-tap” technique to spell whatever you would normally spell on a traditional keypad. That tip right there will save you MANY headaches.
Managing Your Messages With Shortcuts
There have been several occasions where I read an email and didn’t reply to it right away. It happens all the time. Later, I’ll look through my list of message and reply. The keyboard shortcut is to reply is to highlight the message you want (or have it open already) and press the “!” key. That’s it.
That is a lot less effort than you’d have to go through using the scroll ball and the “Blackberry button.” Give it a try and you’ll soon have this shortcut at the top of your list as well.
Here’s another quick tip that can save you hundreds of key punches. At the end of a sentence, instead of pressing ALT and “.” just double space and your Blackberry will add in the period automatically. This will speed up your typing considerably since it doesn’t require the use of both hands. If you’re ever typing an email address, you can do something similar. Just press space where the @ symbol goes and Blackberry adds it automatically.
If you’re inbox is like mine, it can fill up quite fast with text messages, emails, voice mail and of course phone calls. Scrolling down to find a phone call you made earlier in the day can sometimes prove more difficult than it sounds. Try this next time. If you just want to see your phone calls (made and receieved) press and hold ALT while you press the letter P. There they are, only phone calls. Just want your your text or SMS message listed? Press and hold ALT while you press S. Just want voice mail? Press and hold ALT while you press V. When you’re done, either press and hold ALT and I or just press escape.
Spend a good week or two learning to use these shortcuts as much as possible. Maybe you need to write them down on the back of a business card for now. Whatever you have to do, get them memorized. These are so powerful and effective, they’ll save you a ton of time. They’re used so often, they can save you a lot of time in the long run.

To keep your Blackberry Pearl running at the peak of its capabilities, youre going to want to make sure youre not wasting valuable memory on stuff you dont need. Youd be surprised at what hogs up the memory. Well look at a few of the main items and how to delete or manage them.
Let’s take a look at exactly how much memory is available on your Blackberry Pearl. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Go into your phone options. You’ll find these by clicking on the wrench icon.
2. Everything is listed in alphabetical order, so scroll down to STATUS and click on it.
3. FILE TOTAL lists the absolute capacity of your phones memory.
4. The portion of that capacity available is listed as FILE FREE.
Ok, so now that you know how much you have to work with, lets see how big we can make that File Free number.
One of the first things you can do is clean out your inbox. This is pretty straight forward, but something that’s often overlooked. If you don’t need it on your phone, delete it.
Compressing Your Content
If you don’t already have content compression enabled on your Pearl, you’ll want to do that next. I can’t tell you exactly how much room this will open up since I’ve used it from day one. If you’re not using it, it will give you a quick boost in available memory.
1. With the main screen open you’ll see all of your icons on one screen (not the home screen).
2. Click on the little wrench icon (options).
3. Use the pearl to move down to “SECURITY OPTIONS” and press the pearl button.
4. Scroll to and click on General Settings.
5. Scroll down to Content Compression.
6. If it doesnt say Enabled click on it and select it now.
7. Press the little button to the left of the pearl (it’s called the Blackberry button).
8. Now choose SAVE.
Content compression is now activated on your phone. From now on your movies, pictures, music, emails and calendar items will take up a lot less room on your phone. This will increase the amount of memory you have available.
Delete Applications You Dont Use
If you never play BrickBreaker, dont let it hog up all the memory on your Blackberry Pearl. You might be surprised at how many programs are hanging out on your Pearl. Heres how you find them and delete the ones you dont want or need.
1. From your HOME screen, press the “Blackberry Button”. This should give you a window with all of the icons on it.
2. Highlight the little wrench and press the pearl button. These are your Blackberry options.
3. Highlight and select Advanced Options.
4. Scroll to and click on Applications.
5. Choose any applications you don’t think you’ll need.
6. Press the Blackberry button (it’s just left of the Pearl).
7. With that application selected, press the Blackberry (menu) button.
8. That’s it. Now select any other programs you want to delete.
Note: Some applications will require you to restart your Blackberry Pearl before theyre completely removed.

Most people who use a Blackberry Pearl will scroll to an item, press the pearl or Blackberry button, scroll down to the selection they want and press it again. That’s a long process if you’re in a hurry. It’s not going to make or break your hectic schedule, but it does involve some unnecessary action you can soon depart with. You’re about to learn a few of the keyboard shortcuts the pros use.
Shortscuts Using Your Keyboard
A lot of businesses will spell out their phone number to help you remember it. That’s great for remembering but it’s worthless for those of us using a Blackberry Pearl. If you compare the keyboard on your Pearl with one on a traditional phone, you’ll notice the letters don’t land on the same numbers.
So 1-888-HIT-RADIO just doesn’t work. I’ve had to look at another phone to see what the numbers are supposed to be on my Blackberry. Not any more! If you start to dial the number from your home screen (1-888) and then press and hold the ALT key (that’s the one in the lower left corner with the up and down arrows on it) and use the multi-tap feature you can spell out the phone number.
Multi-tap doesn’t mean you type twice as fast, it’s actually a method of entering letters. If you look at the keys on your Pearl, you’ll notice most of the keys have two letters assigned to them. Using multi-tap, if you need to type the 2nd letter on that key you’d press it twice. So, to type the letter “V” using multi-tap you’d have to press the “7″ key two times.
If you want to make a payment using your phone with Verizon Wireless, you’d simply press #PMT and send, but not on a Pearl. Now, knowing what we just learned we can press # and then hold down ALT while we press “.” twice, “9″ once and “2″ once. If that’s confusing, take a look at your Pearl and see that this spells PMT using multi-tap. Press send and you’re all set to make your payment.
Your Messages
Now lets look at faster ways to get around your messages on your Blackberry. The shortcut I use most frequently is the REPLY key when I’m looking at my list of messages. Here’s how it works. If you’re looking at your list of messages and you see something you should have replied to earlier, just press the “!” key. It’s in the upper left corner of the keypad and shares the space with Q and W. This will instantly open up a reply message. Type your message and press send. Done.
Using the scroll wheel method, you would have to press the pearl button to open the message, then press the Blackberry button to bring up your options. Scroll down to “reply” and then press the pearl button again. Finally you’d have a reply-to window open and could start typing.
One more little tip that will help you sort through all of your messages on your Blackberry Pearl. With your list of messages open, try holding down ALT and pressing “S”. This will show you just your SMS messages. Hold ALT and press “P”. That’s just a listing of your phone messages or your call log. Hold down ALT and press “V” and you’ll see a list of your voice mail messages. Hold ALT and press “I” and you’ll only see your incoming messages. When you’re done, press the escape key and you’re back to your default view of messages.
I’ve found, if I try to learn too many shortcuts at one time, I never really master them. So, instead, just focus on these few I’ve given you and you’ll have them memorized in no time at all. These are so powerful and are useful so often, they really will speed up your navigation on your phone. Than you can move on to more important things.
